T20 World Cup 2026: Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar spelt out a technical flaw he believes Sanju Samson is battling as he tries to recover from a lean patch. The Kerala wicketkeeper was dismissed for an eight-ball 22 in India's win over Namibia on Thursday in Delhi.
Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar believes Sanju Samson is grappling with a technical flaw as he attempts to emerge from an extended lean patch with the bat. The former India captain offered advice to Samson ahead of India's much-anticipated T20 World Cup clash against Pakistan in Colombo on 15 February.
Samson scored 22 off eight balls in a rare opportunity that came his way on Thursday against Namibia. Back in the opening slot after replacing Abhishek Sharma, who missed the match due to a stomach illness, Samson walked out alongside Ishan Kishan and immediately looked to take on the Namibian bowling attack.
"Sanju Samson has a technical problem. He goes too deep into the crease and plays that flick shot. You can only hope he times it into the gap or that it goes for six," Gavaskar told JioHotstar after India's 93-run win over Namibia.
"He needs to make improvements, especially when he opens against the new ball. Namibia were clever with their field placements. They set a field specifically to get Samson out. But it was good that he played some nice shots – that must have given him confidence. If he plays the next match against Pakistan, he needs to spend more time at the crease."
