Reiterating that he would never deviate from the State’s two-language policy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said on Tuesday (March 25, 2025) that he would soon make an announcement to “protect the Tamil language and uplift Tamils.”
“I am firm that we can protect the Tamil language and uplift Tamils only if we ensure State autonomy and uphold the rights of States. I will soon come out with an announcement for that purpose,” he said in the Legislative Assembly, while responding to a special mention on the two-language policy by political parties, including the AIADMK. The BJP did not participate in the debate.
Mr. Stalin said: “We are under compulsion to take steps to protect federalism and secure the autonomy of States.”
Responding to AIADMK deputy floor leader R.B. Udayakumar, who raised the issue of a letter written by the former Chief Secretary to the Union government on the PM SHRI scheme, which had led to a debate in Parliament, Mr. Stalin said there was no need to doubt the government’s stand. “We will not accept a three-language policy,” he said.
He said the Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami, who had gone to Delhi, should “take the issue up with the leaders he was supposed to meet during his visit.”
“Tamil and English are the two languages of Tamil Nadu. There is no change in that position. It is our guiding principle. I will never deviate from this position, which is as important to us as our lives,” he said.
Recalling his assertion that he would not accept the three-language policy even if the Union government released ₹10,000 crore to Tamil Nadu, Mr. Stalin said it was not a matter of money, but about the protection of Tamil, the Tamil people, students, and the younger generation.
