Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurates groyne and fish landing center construction, benefiting fishermen in coastal villages.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday laid foundation stone through videoconferencing for constructing groyne and fish landing centre at a cost of ₹15 crore in the coastal village of Kooduthazhai near Uvari in the district.
After the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone, Radhapuram MLA and Speaker of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly M. Appavu formally inaugurated the groyne and fish land center construction at Kooduthazhai and distributed sweets to the fishermen.
Mr. Appavu said Mr. Stalin, who solicited the fishers’ suggestions for their development during the meeting held at Ramanathapuram, was sanctioning in a phased manner the construction of groynes in the coastal hamlets for protecting the boats and the coastal hamlets from sea erosion caused by heavy tides.
As ‘patta’ for housing plots of the fishermen is also being given in a phased manner, the Tirunelveli district fishermen will get the ‘gift’ from the Chief Minister during his visit to Tirunelveli on February 6 and 7.
“Moreover, fishermen who do not have houses, will be given free houses in phases,” Mr. Appavu said.
Chairman of Tirunelveli District Panchayat V.S.R. Jegadish, Assistant Executive Engineer of Fishing Harbour, Guru Packiyam, Assistant Director of Fisheries Rajadurai, parish priest of Kooduthazhai parish Rev. Fr. Benzigar Amal and others were present.
In Thoothukudi, the offices of Joint Director of Fisheries, Assistant Director and Executive Engineer, fishermen training centre, berths at Terespuram and Sippikulam, all constructed the cost of ₹33 crore, were inaugurated by the Chief Minister.
