Sri Lankan Navy arrests 22 Tamil Nadu fishermen; CM Stalin writes to EAM Jaishankar

The Sri Lankan navy, on Wednesday, February 23, arrested 22 fishermen from Tamil Nadu for allegedly crossing the maritime border. Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin has written to the External Affairs Minister, requesting to take action over these attacks.

On Wednesday, February 23, the Sri Lankan Navy carried out two separate arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen for crossing the maritime border.

Nine Tamil Nadu fishermen were arrested and a fishing trawler was seized by the Sri Lankan Navy near Kankesanthurai, a part of Sri Lanka’s Jaffna district, for crossing the maritime border. They were taken to Mayliti fishing port at Jaffna.

In the second incident, 13 fishermen from Nagapattinam were arrested and two fishing trawlers were seized. They were fishing near Katchatheevu but were arrested for crossing the maritime border.

On Wednesday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, MK Stalin, had written a letter to External Affairs Minister, Jaishankar, requesting to take action over attacks on Tami Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy and fishermen.

CM Stalin had mentioned that 29 fishermen had been arrested and 82 fishing trawlers were still under the custody of the Sri Lankan government.

Shockingly, another 22 fishermen have been arrested in the last 24 hours by the Sri Lankan Navy.
