Sri Lanka vs Australia: Travis Head expects his bowling to play a key role in 2nd Test – Going to be a huge part

SL vs AUS, 1st Test, Travis Head picked up four wickets as Australia defeated Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the opening match of the series.

28-year-old Travis Head reckoned that his bowling is going to play an important role for Australia in their second Test against Sri Lanka to take place from July 8 at the Galle International Stadium. In the first Test, which the Aussies won by 10 wickets, Head finished with bowling figures of 2.5-0-10-4.

After he cleaned up Dinesh Chandimal, Head picked up his maiden Test wicket, after which he ran through the Sri Lankan lower order. Head said that he didn’t expect to bowl when Australia needed a few quick wickets to push their opponents on the back-foot.

"It was a waiting game for a few days before the Test and bowling was a big part of that. I knew I was going to have a role at some point but the two spinners, all the bowlers, did a fantastic job for myself and Marnus (Labuschagne) not to be needed at all,” Head was quoted as saying to the reporters.

"It's going to be a huge part of the next Test. I expected to bowl (in the first Test) but maybe not at that stage of the game," he stated.

Head also conjured praise from Aussie Test skipper Pat Cummins. "He's always pretty keen for a bowl. First Test wicket too, so he's got four now. We wanted Travis in the side because he offers not only batting but bowling as well,” Cummins had said.

Parking aside his performance with the ball, Head didn’t have a great outing with the bat in the first Test. Batting at No.5, Head scored six runs before giving a simple caught and bowled to off-spinner Dhananjaya de Silva.

Before the first Test, the South Australia-born Head had picked up 54 wickets from 135 matches in first-class cricket.
