International software supplier Kaseya was the latest company hit with a "sophisticated cyberattack," the company announced Saturday. The breach may have compromised thousands of companies.
Kaseya first reported a security threat targeting its "VSA product" Friday afternoon and said in an update Saturday that the issue had been localized. Hackers encrypted customer files and demanded money in order to decrypt them. The company said Friday that "only a very small percentage" of customers were affected by the attack, estimating a total of 40 worldwide. "We've heard from the vast majority of our customers that they experienced no issues at all," Fred Voccola, the company's CEO, stated.Ashley White received her earliest combat action badge from the United States Army soon after the first lieutenant arrived in Afghanistan. The silver military award, recognizing soldiers who've been personally engaged by an attacker during conflict, was considered an achievement in and of itself as well as an affirming rite of passage for the newly deployed. White had earned it for using her own body to shield a group of civilian women and children from gunfire that broke out in the midst of her third mission in Kandahar province. All of them survived. She never mentioned the badge to anyone in her battalion.
