Sri Lanka achieved the feat on Day 4 of the Test match, thanks to a double century by Dinesh Chandimal. The wicketkeeper-batter played an impressive knock to remain unbeaten on 206 as Sri Lanka folded for 554.

Sri Lanka on Monday created history in the ongoing second Test match against Australia at the Galle International Stadium, registering 500-plus runs against the Down Under side for the first time since 1992.

The Dimuth Karunaratne-led Sri Lanka team achieved the feat on the fourth day of the Test match, thanks to a double century by Dinesh Chandimal. The wicketkeeper-batter played an impressive knock to remain unbeaten on 206 as Sri Lanka folded for 554 runs.

Sri Lanka have set the target of 190 for Australia, who had won the first Test by 10 wickets last week at the same venue.

Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis missed out on their respective hundreds, while Angelo Mathews and Kamindu Mendis smashed a fifty each in Sri Lanka's first batting innings. Karunaratne and Mendis scored 86 and 85 before Mitchell Swepson and Nathan Lyon removed them in a space of nearly 10 overs.

The second Test match between Sri Lanka and Australia is Kamindu's Test debut for the island nation. The only other time Sri Lanka managed to reach 500 runs against Australia in the longest format was 1992.

The then Arjuna Ranatunga-led Sri Lanka team had declared on 547 for the loss of eight wickets. However, the team still lost the match to Allan Border's Australia by 16 runs.

The 1992 Sri Lanka team had three centurions - Arjuna Ranatunga (127), Asanka Gurusinha (137) and Romesh Kaluwitharana (132*) - in their first batting innings. However, in the second innings, Sri Lanka collapsed in front of Greg Matthews and Shane Warne and the island nation was bundled out for only 164.
