Cool temperatures and sufficient snowfall have combined to helped some Maritime ski hills add a few extra days of business to this year's season.
Crabbe Mountain decided to join in on the fun, affording ski and snowboard enthusiasts a chance to hit the slopes for the first time this season on Sunday.
The official start to the season for the hill, which is located about 50 kilometres northwest of Fredericton, is slated for Friday.
But when Carsen Meyer heard Crabbe Mountain was opening up for a bonus day, he couldn't pass up the opportunity to travel from Sussex to hit the slopes.
Meyer says he enjoys snowboarding, but couldn't hop on his board last year due to a broken collar bone.
"We just thought it was a bonus that Mother Nature was good to us this year," said Jessica Spalding, general manager of Crabbe Mountain.
A bonus day is something new and only possible due to the favourable weather conditions, she said.
Meyer's friend Sawyer Lake texted him on Saturday to tell him about the hill's bonus day.
"I didn't even have snowboarding in my mind until he texted me, telling me it was open," Meyer said.
His love for snowboarding makes him eager to get to the hill more regularly, and getting to do so following an injury made it even more exciting.
"For me it means a lot ... this is my first day back since a year and I was so stoked when he told me he wanted to go," Meyer said.
"I am just hoping not to break my collar bone again."
Céline Parent is the general manager at Mont Farlagne in Edmundston. She says the early winter weather brought what's ammounted to nearly a two-week bonus for her ski park.
Every year the park is able to open a couple of runs around Dec. 20, but this year they officially launched their season with seven open slopes on Friday.
