The Perambalur district administration has opened temporary relief centres at six places to accommodate people, especially those residing in the low lying areas where water stagnation has been reported after heavy rain. A few government schools have been converted into temporary relief centres where food packets and drinking water was being distributed to the people.
The relief centres have been opened at Veeramanallur, Ogalur, Velvimangalam, Pillangulam, V. Kalathur, and Kottarai. Three centres are functioning in Kunnam taluk, two in Veppanthattai taluk, and one in Alathur taluk. Official sources said 258 people, including 107 women and 59 children, have been put up the six centres. They were given food packets and drinking water.
The district administration has compiled a list of thatched houses, asbestos roof houses and tiled houses which were damaged in Kunnam, Alathur, Perambalur, and Veppanthattai taluks in the incessant rain in the district. Sources said 38 thatched houses, 16 tiled houses, and 5 houses with asbestos roofing had been damaged. One cow, one calf, and a goat had died and one woman injured, the sources said.
Several tanks in the district were filling up. Of the 73 tanks, 21 had attained full capacity level as on December 12. This includes the Venbavur tank, V. Kalathur big tank, Ogalur tank, Ladapuran big tank, Kurumbalur tank, Perumathur tank, Nerkunam tank, Ayikudy tank, and Pandagapady tank.
A couple of other tanks had attained 91% to 99% storage capacity — those being the Arumbavur big tank and the Thenur tank. The storage position of water in the Thondamandhurai tank, Vayalur tank, T. Kalathur small tank, and Kilumathur tank ranged from 81% to 90%.
