Severe thunderstorm warnings in effect for parts of central Alberta

Thunderstorm and tornado warnings are in effect for parts of west central Alberta as severe weather events move east across the province.
As of 5:30 p.m., tornado warnings were in effect for parts of Lacombe County, Red Deer County and Clearwater county. Doppler radar indicates a potential tornado located 20 km northwest of Markervillle.
A tornado was also seen touching down outside of Coronation, Alta. earlier Monday.
The weather service is also tracking a cluster of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts, nickel to ping pong ball-sized hail and heavy rain.
Severe thunderstorm warnings were in effect around 5:30 p.m. for:
Environment Canada recommends to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches, warning of heavy downpours causing flash floods and damage or injury caused by large hail.
Lightning also kills and injures Canadians every year.
Heat warnings remain in effect throughout much of the province. Severe thunderstorm watches are also in effect for many areas.

Calgary police say they will have an increased presence at the city's official menorah lighting ceremony Monday, after at least 15 people were killed in an attack at a Hanukkah event at Sydney's Bondi Beach. "The Calgary Police Service has increased patrols around synagogues and at local Hanukkah events, including at tomorrow's menorah lighting at city hall," a police statement said.
