Rohit Sharma tests positive for Covid-19, India captain doubtful for Birmingham Test vs England

India tour of England: Rohit Sharma tested positive for Covid-19 in a Rapid Antigen Test conducted on Saturday. The India skipper is in isolation at the team hotel in Leicestershire.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India said on Sunday that Rohit Sharma tested positive for Covid-19 and has been in isolation in the team hotel at Leicestershire even as the rest of his teammates are involved in the 4-day practice match against the local county side.

Rohit Sharma tested positive for Covid-19 in the Rapid Antigen Test conducted on Saturday, June 25. The India captain did not take the field on Day 3 of the 4-day practice match at the Leicestershire County Club.

Rohit is currently under the supervision of the BCCI medical team in England and it remains to be seen if he will be fit to take the field in the rescheduled 5th Test against England, starting July 1 in Birmingham.

"Team India Captain Mr Rohit Sharma has tested positive for COVID-19 following a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) conducted on Saturday. He is currently in isolation at the team hotel and is under the care of the BCCI Medical Team," the BCCI said in a statement on Sunday.

Rohit Sharma was part of the ongoing 4-day practice game as the India captain opened the innings for the visiting team and made 25 runs before getting out to Roman Walker, the 21-year-old Leicestershire pacer who ended up with 5 wickets.

Rohit not coming out to open the batting for India on Day 3 of the practice match helped raise a few eyebrows as the skipper hadn't spent a lot of time in the middle in the first innings. However, as it turned out, Rohit was not even at the Leicestershire county ground during Day 3 action.

India will face a huge setback if Rohit is not available for the first Test, starting July 1. India already are missing their first-choice opener KL Rahul, who has not travelled to England due to an injury concern that also kept him out of the home T20I series against South Africa.
