Mazda is bringing back the rotary engine for use as a range-extending generator in its MX-30 electric SUV, which can only go 100 miles between charges.
Wankel rotary engines use a triangular-shaped rotor spinning in an oval chamber instead of reciprocating pistons. Gary Gastelu is Fox News Digital's automotive editor.
The design provides excellent power density and smooth operation, but at the expense of some efficiency and with poorer emissions performance.
