News of a community pool reopening made quite the splash in Eastern P.E.I. this weekend.
The pool, located at the TCAP Family Aquatics and Fitness Center in Montague, had been closed for maintenance since May.
Heather MacLean, the treasurer with the Rotary Club of Montague and Eastern P.E.I., said hundreds of people used the pool this weekend.
"So many happy faces, so many excited children and adults that are excited to see the pool back in action," she said.
The club sponsored some free open swims Saturday and Sunday. They also covered costs for lifeguarding services.
"We just thought it was a big reason to celebrate and we wanted to see everyone have access," said MacLean.
The pool first closed due to a problem with the sand filter. Staff then started to empty and clean the pool in preparation for the new system.
But while doing routine maintenance, a pillar that helps hold up the ceiling was damaged. An engineering firm then had to be brought in to come up with solutions.
Jake Harding is one of many locals excited to have it back. He used to take his kids to leisure swims, and his wife is on the facility's adult swim team.
TCAP is the only pool on the eastern part of the Island, making the next closest facility — UPEI — about 40 minutes away.
"The pool at UPEI is fantastic, but it gets pretty busy … and it's also a lot longer of a trek to get there," he said.
"[Now there's] chances to go after school, chances to go on weekends and get the kids in the water and let them have some fun. It's definitely a game changer."
Jeri Munro, who has been on the TCAP board of directors since 2016, said the pool is used by people of all ages, for anything from open swims to swimming lessons to team practices.
"Everybody benefits from having that pool back open again," she said.
