Rare tick-borne virus causing neurological symptoms diagnosed in Northeastern state
Fox News
A Maine resident was hospitalized with Powassan virus after developing neurological symptoms from a tick bite in Hancock County during ongoing tick season.
"Unlike most tick-borne illnesses, 10% to 15% of severe cases are fatal." Melissa Rudy is senior health editor and a member of the lifestyle team at Fox News Digital. Story tips can be sent to melissa.rudy@fox.com.
Powassan virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected woodchuck tick, or from an infected deer, though that is less likely.
