Rallies to football matches: How Karnataka hijab row is escalating across India
India Today
The Karnataka High Court is hearing the hijab case. The Supreme Court has refused to take up the matter before the HC has delivered its judgment. However, that's not stopping demonstrators from registering their protest across the country.
As the Karnataka hijab row picks up steam and is heard by the high court, the protests have spread across the country. Demonstrators staged several protests in a number of ways demanding that Muslim girl students be allowed to wear hijab in classrooms.
On Friday, the petitioners received a setback from the Supreme Court when it refused to conduct an urgent hearing on the matter on Monday. Chief Justice of India NV Ramana had earlier said that the Karnataka High Court should hear the case first. The HC is scheduled to hear the case next Monday. However, that's not stopping demonstrators from registering their protest.
Here’s what’s happening in various states, besides Karnataka, over the hijab row:
A massive rally was organised in Malegaon in Maharashtra on Thursday, allegedly without permission, to protest against the move to prohibit hijab in government educational institutions. The protest was reportedly organised by Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind.
In Pune, members of the Hindu community launched a counter-protest by dressing up in saffron and chanting "Jai Shivaji".
Legal professionals' body All India Lawyers' Association for Justice held a protest in the national capital outside the Karnataka Bhawan in Delhi on Thursday.
Left-wing students’ organisation All India Students’ Union also held a protest in front of the Karnataka Bhawan. Several activists of the organisation were detained by the Delhi Police.
