Quebec man faces 115 charges for alleged violent crime, theft spree in Toronto: police

A Quebec man is facing 115 charges in Toronto for myriad alleged offences spanning more than a year, including multiple stabbings, auto thefts, police pursuits and break and enters, Toronto police said Tuesday.

In a news release, police said Carl Chateauvert, 34, was arrested late last week after he allegedly stole "police equipment" from a vehicle days earlier. 

After his arrest, Chateauvert was identified as the suspect in a separate investigation into a series of property thefts from vehicles that initially began in April 2024, as well as in "numerous other incidents across Toronto."

Investigators connected him to earlier alleged offences after carrying out a search warrant at a home in the area of Yonge and Wellesley streets, where they found property and identification belonging to victims of thefts, the release said.

Police similarly allege Chateauvert used several aliases and had previously led officers from various GTA police services on vehicle pursuits, including through Toronto's downtown core. 

According to the release, Chateauvert has also been charged in the January 29 stabbings of two men, ages 26 and 41, in the area of Kingston and Galloway roads in Scarborough, and the May 1 stabbing of a 32-year-old man downtown. Both of those incidents resulted in life-threatening injuries for victims.

Chateauvert faces an additional 28 charges from other police services in Ontario and Quebec, though the release from Toronto police did not provide any details about those alleged offences.

Chateauvert was scheduled to appear in court at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre later Tuesday morning.

Investigators are encouraging anyone who thinks they may have been a victim of the accused or anyone with information that may be useful to contact police.
