Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the Quad leaders’ summit alongside US President Joe Biden, Australian PM Anthony Albanese and Japanese PM Fumio Kishida in Tokyo on May 24. PM Modi will also hold bilateral talks with US President Biden on the sidelines of the summit.
Here are details of what can be expected from the Quad Tokyo summit:
- The Quad members, the US, Japan, Australia and India, will launch a satellite-based maritime initiative aimed at curbing illegal fishing in the Indo-Pacific on May 24, reported the Financial Times while quoting a US official.
- The system will allow the Quad countries to monitor illegal fishing even when fishing boats have turned off the transponders. China is allegedly responsible for 95 per cent of the illegal fishing in the Indo-Pacific.
- In order to reduce dependence on Russian weapons, the US is trying to woo India with a proposed USD 500 million military aid package.

- PM Modi will hold bilateral talks with US President Biden on the sidelines of the summit. Both leaders are expected to review the India-US Strategic Partnership.
