The Puducherry Assembly on Thursday (March 27, 2025) adopted a resolution seeking Statehood for the Union Territory (UT). This is the 16th time that such a resolution has been passed in the Assembly.
The Statehood subject, which was brought to the House as a private member resolution by the DMK, Congress, and an Independent legislator, was converted into a government resolution and then adopted unanimously after the ruling AINRC and BJP members extended their support.
Requesting the Assembly to convert the resolutions moved by the legislators as a government motion, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said the Cabinet also shared the sentiment expressed by the MLAs on the matter of Statehood.
“A conducive situation is emerging, and we are hopeful of achieving the objective,” he said, without elaborating on the subject.
Earlier, initiating a discussion on Statehood, Opposition leader and DMK Puducherry convenor R. Siva said the House had already passed 15 such resolutions after the territory came out of the French rule.
“We have adopted 15 resolutions, but the purpose was not served. The Congress, while ruling at the Centre, did not heed to the demand, and now the BJP is doing the same thing. Your (Chief Minister’s AINRC) party has an alliance with the BJP. Now, you should come out of the alliance and fight for Statehood. The DMK will extend our full support,” Mr. Siva said.
The Opposition leader said Statehood was necessary for the territory as the Chief Minister himself, in the current session of the Assembly, had admitted that there were delays in taking decisions owing to the lack of administrative support. “The Chief Minister, just a few days ago, spoke about the industrial development in Tamil Nadu and how Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was able to take decisions quickly for setting up industries. Mr. Rangasamy also mentioned the delay in clearance of files by officials in Puducherry,” Mr. Siva said.
