The Department of Justice says no one was hurt during what it's calling a disturbance at Her Majesty's Penitentiary on Friday night.
"Thanks to the skills and training of our correctional officers, it was successfully de-escalated," wrote departmental spokesperson Eric Humber in an emailed statement late Saturday afternoon.
"The department commends the work of the staff at the facility for successfully resolving the situation."
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, paramedics and correctional officers descended on the prison around 8:30 p.m. The extent of the RNC's involvement is not immediately clear.
Multiple sources with knowledge of the incident described it as a "riot" on one of the prison units that involved an altercation between an inmate and a correctional officer.
The prison was locked down overnight.
In a separate incident, Humber said two people were sent to hospital from the St. John’s lockup. He said one person was admitted, and the other was released.
"For privacy reasons, no further details can be provided," Humber wrote.
