Toronto, York and Peel police are increasing their presence in the Jewish community during Hanukkah after the harrowing attack at Australia’s Bondi Beach on Sunday.
At least 11 people were killed and more than two dozen injured in a shooting by two gunmen at a Jewish holiday event at the Sydney beach.
Australian police have deemed the shooting a terrorist attack and are working to determine whether others were involved.
One suspected gunman was dead and another in critical condition, authorities said. A police officer is also among the dead and another was injured, said New South Wales Police.
The incident has raised alarms locally in the Greater Toronto Area with promises of caution and monitoring during the holiday season by police.
Peel Regional Police said they were not aware of any related threats at this time, but that they would “remain vigilant” with an increased police presence at places of worship.
“Every person deserves to feel safe, valued, and supported. No exceptions,” said Peel police on social media.
Toronto police echoed similar sentiments on social media by saying it was monitoring any activity that may target Jewish residents. Police will also be more present throughout the Jewish community during Hanukkah as “a proactive measure,” they said.
Anyone who witnesses anything suspicious should report it immediately, said Toronto police.
York police said on social media it too would increase “outreach, visibility and police patrols” across the region. They said any form of hate crime or threat of violence would not be tolerated.
“We know global events can have a profound local impact and that many of our residents have been deeply affected,” said York police. “We are in constant contact with our federal and provincial partners to actively identify potential threats.”
Premier Doug Ford shared his condolences on social media for “the terrible attack” and for the Jewish community around the world. He said he hoped that the attackers would be “swiftly brought to justice.”
“We must all stand with our Jewish community against hate and antisemitism wherever it is found,” said Ford.
