Pedalling for a greener tomorrow

Join 90 riders in SAKSHAM 2025–26 Cyclothon promoting fuel conservation and sustainable living through cycling in Thiruvananthapuram.

Sunday morning was yet to dawn, but the air at Kowdiar Park was already buzzing with cyclists on a mission. This was part of initiatives under SAKSHAM 2025–26 awareness ride promoting fuel conservation and sustainable living.

The cyclothon, which was organised by Indian Oil Corporation Ltd ( IOCL), is part of a nationwide campaign observed from February 1 to 15 to spread environmental stewardship and the adoption of greener energy practices. This flagship oil industry initiative focusses on conserving oil and gas while fostering sustainable energy practices across multiple cities.

The event was flagged off at 6 a.m. from Kowdiar Park by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law & Order), Trivandrum, Deepak Dhankar. “Such events are vital in cultivating a culture of sustainability,” he said, appreciating participation of cycling enthusiasts which included school students, women who came together at dawn for a meaningful cause highlighting collective community efforts. He also urged citizens to integrate cycling into their daily routines for its dual benefits to self & environment alike.

Around 90 riders led by Cyclotrivian, a cycling club in Trivandrum set off enjoying the crisp morning air and traffic free roads with each pedal stroke spreading the message that cycling is not only a fitness activity — it’s a sustainable lifestyle choice that cuts down pollution, fosters well-being. The 13-km ride, flagged off from Kowdiar Park, passed through Museum, Palayam, General Hospital Road and culminated at Shanghumughom. The ride was completed in approximately 45 minutes, with the cyclists transforming the city streets into vibrant spaces of eco-awareness.

The event, which was supported by The Hindu In School, concluded with a prize distribution ceremony and participants pledged to advocate for adopting green practices to ensure cleaner air and healthier lifestyle in the capital city.
