Pat Cummins happy with a spot in playing XI amid captaincy debate: Australia are in no rush to find ODI captain

Australia Test captain Pat Cummins once again indicated that he is not interested in taking over the ODI team from Aaron Finch. Speaking in an interview ahead of the series vs India, Cummins said that he is happy to keep his place in the XI.

Australia ODI vice-captain Pat Cummins has yet again shown his reluctance to take up the vacant position of captain in the ODI team after the retirement of Aaron Finch. Cummins, speaking to the ABC network, ahead of Australia's tour to India said that the team is in no rush to appoint a captain and he will be more than happy if he just retains his place in the playing XI under the captaincy of any senior member of the team.

“I think we are in no rush. We will chat through a few of those different options. Good thing is that we have plenty of options. There's Steve Smith, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey , Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa. We have got a lot of senior guys in the line-up, who could do a very good job. Hopefully, I am in the starting XI, and I will be happy,” Cummins said in an interview with ABC, ahead of departing for India.

Cummins, whose rise has been tremendous as the first pace bowling captain of the Australia's Test side agreed that a lot happened last year in his life. The fast bowler not only became the captain of his team after the sacking of Tim Paine, he also became a father and got married to his partner last year. Summing up the whole year, which also included the triumphant T20 World Cup campaign, Cummins said that it will be tough to top 2021.

“It's going to be hard to top last year. It happened so quickly. Honestly, like being a dad is a whole different dynamic from being kind of a travelling cricketer,” he talked about his life over the past 12 months, where he was named the captain of the Australian side, Ashes win over England and becoming a father.

“It all happened quite quickly for me. In some ways the Ashes series at home brings pressure, but also, I did not feel any more pressure, because it happened so quickly. I was not overthinking and trying to do my best,” he further added.

The Australian team will be arriving in India to play a T20I series as their preparatory campaign for the T20 World Cup.
