A number of parties in Guelph, including a large unsanctioned gathering at private student residences that saw hundreds of people on Chancellor's Way, resulted in a total of 46 charges, police said Friday.
Police provided a breakdown of the charges:
Police noted 14 of the charges for open alcohol, one of the charges related to persons under 19 consuming alcohol and all three charges under the nuisance parties bylaw were connected to the party on Chancellor's Way. Police had previously said the service saw an additional cost of $30,000 to bring in extra officers.
As well, seven people were taken to hospital from the rowdy party for injuries ranging from extreme intoxication to being hit by beer bottles.
Earlier this week, the City of Guelph announced it was increasing the fines for people who host a nuisance party from $500 to $750 after the city has seen a number of large gatherings involving young people in recent weeks. The city said it had received 293 complaints for noise and nuisance parties since the start of September.
Scott Green, manager of corporate and community safety, said in a release the increased fine was directly linked to the high number of parties and nuisance calls bylaw officers had attended in the past month.
"This increase shows how serious we are about protecting our neighbourhoods, residents and first responders," Green said.
