P.E.I. gas, diesel prices fall 4 cents a litre as federal carbon increase looms

Gas and diesel prices dropped on Prince Edward Island Friday, just three days before an increase in the federal carbon levy is expected to add an almost equal amount to the price of a litre.
The price changes came after the weekly price review from the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission.
The cost of propane on P.E.I. is recalculated every other week. On March 22, it fell an average of 2.8 cents per litre for bulk delivery, to $0.87.
IRAC had previously calculated that on April 1, the federal carbon charge will increase 3.3 cents per litre for gas, 4.01 cents per litre for diesel, and 2.32 cents per litre on propane.
The federal carbon tax is not being applied to heating oil in the Atlantic provinces because of a three-year exemption the Trudeau government granted on Oct. 26, citing the higher reliance on oil to heat houses in the region.
The federal government has said a family of four on P.E.I. will receive $880 in rebates each year to compensate for higher fuel prices.
Before Friday, gas prices on P.E.I. had risen for three weeks in a row. With the latest adjustment, they are hovering at about 10 cents a litre higher than they were in January.
