An overnight fire on the roof of a Kamloops, B.C., school led to water and smoke damage early Sunday morning.
Kamloops Fire Rescue platoon captain Jim Gorman said crews responded just before 1 a.m. PT on Sunday after a fire at Westmount Elementary School.
Crews arrived and were able to knock the flames down fairly quickly, and fire investigators and RCMP will look into the cause of the blaze, he said.
"There is some damage to the roof. I believe there's no real structural damage to the building itself, but yeah, there's definitely some water and smoke damage," he said.
A spokesperson for the Kamloops-Thompson School District said in a statement that they would update Westmount Elementary students and their parents on how school could look on Monday.
"District staff are working with the [fire inspector] to determine the extent of the damage and to initiate remediation," they wrote.
Maverick Landsburg, a local who witnessed the fire and called 911 just after 12:50 a.m. PT, said he saw flames on the roof and inside the school building while driving past.
"We didn’t see anybody around the school or on the roof," he said.
