Organized crime investigators are probing an early daylight shooting in northwest Calgary on Thursday that sent one man to hospital with apparent gunshot wounds.
Officers responded to calls about a shooting in the neighbourhood of Sage Hill around 8:30 a.m. Arriving at the scene in the 200 block of Sage Meadows Green, they found a man in his 40s suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
The man was taken to hospital in critical condition.
A short time later, officers were called to a nearby vehicle fire in the community of Evanston.
Police believe the incidents are connected and that vehicle was used in the shooting before being abandoned and set on fire in the 100 block of Evansglen Close N.W.
"Although the investigation remains in the early stages, we believe the shooting was targeted and are also exploring possible connections to organized-crime conflict in Calgary," said a police statement.
Investigators are reviewing security-camera footage and seeking to speak with anyone who may have seen something around either location. Police say there were many witnesses to the incidents.
"This shooting has the hallmarks of organized crime, and we're looking to the public to help us identify who was responsible," said Staff Sgt. Mark Rahn of the organized crime operations unit.
