One man is dead and another missing after a boating accident roughly 30 kilometres from Kimmirut, Nunavut.
Local search co-ordinator Rosie Akavak said the two men were out looking for soapstone, when their boat struck an object near Big Island (Qikiqtarjuaq) on Friday morning.
Search crews, which included resources from Ontario's Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, looked for the two men by air and sea, according to Nunavut RCMP Insp. Denis Lambe.
They found the body of a man in his mid-twenties.
As for the man who's yet to be located, Lambe said they've called off the search and filed a missing person report.
He said they're withholding the identities of the two men while their families are consulted.

Sarnia City Council will hold a special meeting Tuesday morning to respond to social media comments made by Coun. Bill Dennis, who criticized city spending on a new mural by Indigenous artist Kennady Osborne as “virtue signalling by woke politicians” — then made a series of comments in response to a reply from Aamjiwnaang Chief Janelle Nahmabin that some have characterized as unprofessional and aggressive.
