Abraham Lincoln issued the "preliminary" Emancipation Proclamation on this day in history, Sept. 22, 1862, announcing the slaves would be freed on Jan. 1, 1863.
He made the announcement to the nation as the Civil War dragged through its second year. It had grown much deadlier than almost anyone had anticipated. Kerry J. Byrne is a lifestyle reporter with Fox News Digital.
"All persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free," Lincoln announced.
