Margaret Thatcher became the United Kingdom's first female prime minister on this day in history, May 4, 1979, at age 54 — and led the U.K. for nearly 12 years, earning the moniker "Iron Lady."

"During the election campaign," noted the BBC, "Thatcher said the Conservatives would cut income tax, reduce public expenditure, make it easier for people to buy their own homes and curb the power of the unions." She served as Britain's prime minister for almost 12 years.  "Direct taxes were cut and the growth of public expenditure controlled." "She played an important part in creating a new era of détente with the Soviets in her dealings with Mikhail Gorbachev." Thatcher remained in Parliament until 1992. Erica Lamberg is a contributing writer for Fox News Digital.

Here's more about her life and career.
