"The erosion of basic principles like due process and the expanding use of our military on domestic soil puts the liberties of all Americans at risk," he said.
Former President Barack Obama is speaking out against President Donald Trump’s deployment of the National Guard in Washington, D.C.
“The erosion of basic principles like due process and the expanding use of our military on domestic soil puts the liberties of all Americans at risk, and should concern democrats and republicans alike,” Obama posted Thursday.
Trump said there was a “crime emergency” in D.C. earlier this month after an administration staffer was mugged, and has since sent in National Guard units to patrol the streets of the capital. Some of those units are armed with handguns and rifles.
Despite the show of force, National Guard members have spent most of their time standing around, chatting with tourists and picking up trash. Even so, Trump has expressed his desire to send units to other major cities, including Chicago and New York City.
In his social media post, Obama linked to Ezra Klein’s New York Times interview with Radley Balko in which both journalists discussed Trump’s expansion of the police state. That includes a growing number of masked agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement snatching people off the streets throughout the country.
