Nunavut MLAs will pick a new premier and cabinet today
CBC
Nunavut’s newly elected MLAs will choose new leadership today — including the new premier.
The 2025 Nunavut Leadership Forum will begin at 10 a.m. at the legislature chamber.
The day will begin with the election of the Speaker of the Assembly, followed by the election of the premier and members of the executive council (cabinet), all done by secret ballot.
The new premier will choose the cabinet portfolios, which will be distributed among the eight other cabinet members in the coming days.
This is a practice unique to Nunavut and the N.W.T., which operates as consensus governments.
Only 21 of the 22 electorates will be represented at the Nunavut Legislative Assembly today.
Voters in the Aggu riding, which includes the northern part of Igloolik, return to the polls on Dec. 15 following a tie between the two candidates.
The proceedings of Nunavut's leadership forum will be televised on local community cable stations where available and on the direct-to-home satellite service on the Bell (channel 513) and Shaw (channel 181) networks.
Hearings are live-streamed here.
Residents of Iqaluit can also listen to the live radio broadcast of the proceedings on the following FM channels: Floor: 92.5 / Inuktitut: 94.7 / English: 102.1.
