Virender Sehwag has said that during Virat Kohli's captaincy tenure, there was a trend of changing the team after almost every Test.
Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag opined that ex-captain Sourav Ganguly built a new team, something that he is not sure Virat Kohli did during his tenure as skipper of the national team.
The 43-year-old said that during Kohli's captaincy era, there was a trend of changing the team after almost every Test, irrespective of whether India won or lost.
"Sourav Ganguly built a new team, brought in new players and backed them through their highs and lows," Sehwag said on Home of Heroes, Sports18's newest offering. "I doubt if Kohli did that in his tenure."
"In my opinion, the #1 captain is the one who builds a team and gives confidence to his players. He (Kohli) backed some players, some he did not."
Kohli announced that he would step down as the T20I captain following the T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE. India suffered a humiliating early exit from the tournament, which also marked the end of Ravi Shastri's tenure as head coach.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) then sacked Kohli as the captain of the one-day team, saying that they wanted to have one skipper in the white-ball game. In a press conference, Kohli said that he was informed about his sacking 90 minutes before the board handed the role to Rohit Sharma.
Kohli then went onto relinquish the Test captaincy after India lost the away Test 1-2 to South Africa earlier this year. His current lean patch in the ongoing Indian Premier League is raising questions about whether he should be part of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 in October in Australia.
