A tractor-trailer rollover early Thursday morning has resulted in the closure of a section of the Red Hill Valley Parkway (RHVP) and motorists should avoid the area, Hamilton police say.
Shortly after 12:30 a.m., police responded to a transport truck travelling northbound on the RHVP between Greenhill Avenue and King Street E., police said in a news release.
“The truck had overturned, spilling three to four large steel coils onto the roadway. These coils are currently blocking the middle lanes, causing a significant obstruction,” police said in the release.
Police said southbound lanes of the RHVP remain open, however northbound lanes between Mud Street and King Street E. are fully closed.
A police spokesperson told CBC Hamilton at 7:30 a.m. that the closure will remain in place “for several more hours.”
Police said the collision also caused extensive damage to approximately 90 metres of guardrail separating the northbound and southbound RHVP lanes. Debris from the transport truck and damaged guardrail are scattered throughout the northbound roadway, prompting lengthy ongoing cleanup and repair.
Drivers can expect delays and increased traffic congestion on surrounding roadways, police said.
