The U.S. could be in for another active hurricane season in the months ahead. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released its 2021 Atlantic hurricane season outlook on Thursday, saying an above-normal number of named storms and hurricanes is likely.
The NOAA outlook predicts a likelihood of 13 to 20 named storms with sustained winds of at least 39 mph. It says 6 to 10 of those are likely to become hurricanes, and 3 to 5 may become major hurricanes of Category 3 or higher. The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1 and runs through November 30.Ashley White received her earliest combat action badge from the United States Army soon after the first lieutenant arrived in Afghanistan. The silver military award, recognizing soldiers who've been personally engaged by an attacker during conflict, was considered an achievement in and of itself as well as an affirming rite of passage for the newly deployed. White had earned it for using her own body to shield a group of civilian women and children from gunfire that broke out in the midst of her third mission in Kandahar province. All of them survived. She never mentioned the badge to anyone in her battalion.
