No private hospital for surgery: ED opposes Anil Deshmukh's request in court

Former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, currently lodged in jail, has sought permission to be shifted to a private hospital for surgery.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has opposed the request made by former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh in a special court, seeking permission to be shifted to a private hospital for surgery.
The special court in Mumbai, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), will be passing its order on the application on Tuesday.
The application, filed by lawyers Aniket Nikam and Inderpal Singh on behalf of the former minister, stated that 74-year-old Deshmukh is suffering from various ailments and has been in jail for the past six months. Last month, he fell in prison and dislocated his shoulder. The state-run JJ Hospital had suggested surgery and Deshmukh wanted to undergo this surgery by a doctor of his choice.
They also pointed out that there is one particular test which the JJ hospital has said cannot be done at the state-run facility.The central agency, in a reply filed through its assistant director Tassine Sultan, sought rejection of Deshmukh's application and said that private hospitalization wasn’t necessary.The ED relied on information from the head of the cardiology department at JJ Hospital, who said that there was no correlation of "stress thallium test" with shoulder surgery in Deshmukh's case as the said test was conducted only to rule out "cardiac ischemia".Deshmukh was arrested on November 2 last year by the central agency in connection with allegations of money laundering and bribes taken from restaurant and bar owners and routing the money through hawala allegedly to his own trust.
