The Karnataka government has decided to not increase the fees of undergraduate medical courses for the academic year 2025-26. Incidentally, it recently allowed a 7.5% fee hike for engineering and architecture courses.
The decision to not hike the fee was taken at a meeting held with Sharan Prakash Patil, Minister for Medical Education and private medical and dental college managements, on Thursday.
Private medical and dental college managements had demanded a 10% to 15% fee hike for medical courses. The government had allowed a 10% hike in fee of medical courses last year.
According to sources, private dental college managements repeatedly requested the Minister for a fee hike. However, the demand for dental courses has been falling every year. The sources said that the Minister told them that if the fees for these courses had to be increased, the demand for dental courses would fall further.
Speaking to The Hindu, Dr. Patil said, “There was a 10% hike last year, and this year we said there will be no increase and the medical and dental college management representative agreed to it. The consensual agreement will be signed soon.”
With this, the fees for government quota seats in private medical colleges will remain ₹1,40,621, and for private quota seat in private colleges it will be ₹11,88,167.
In government medical colleges, the fee will be ₹50,000 per annum.
