
NIT-K alumnus secures first rank in Engineering Services Examination by UPSC

Himanshu Thapliyal, an alumnus of the National Institute of Technology - Karnataka (NIT-K), Surathkal, Mangaluru, has secured the all-India first rank in the Engineering Services Examination conducted by the UPSC in 2024.

Mr. Thapliyal is a 2023 batch M. Tech (Nanotechnology) student of NIT-K.
Born in Uttarakhand and raised in Lucknow, Mr. Thapliyal began his academic journey with a JEE rank of 5,83,000. His determination and hard work led him to achieve the top spot in engineering services exam. Mr. Thapliyal pursued a B. Tech in Electronics and Communication at NPSEI, Pithoragarh, and, with dedication, cracked GATE to join his dream M. Tech program at NIT-K in Nanotechnology (2021–2023), a release from NIT-K said on Monday.
Mr. Thapliyal intends to join the Indian Telecom Services, the NIT-K said.
“With this rank, I can finally achieve that goal. My focus now is on understanding the system and identifying the boundaries within which I can operate. Once I have a clear grasp of system, I aim to give back to society,” the release quoted him of saying.
“Initially, it was very difficult for me to decide what I truly wanted to do in life. The whole idea of getting into NIT-K was to gain exposure, meet diverse friends, and figure out my path. NIT-K not only provided me with an excellent platform to learn and grow, but it also shaped my mindset, helping me make the right decisions. I feel grateful that I chose the right college at the right time in my life,” Mr. Thapliyal said.
Offering advise to aspirants of UPSC examinations he said, “Your time at NIT-K is incredibly valuable, so make the most of it and enjoy every moment. Balancing your studies with UPSC preparation is crucial. Don’t miss out on events and activities. Maintain a balance and stay disciplined in everything you do.”
