NIA arrests one accused in Assam 'Maoist' case

The NIA on Tuesday arrested a Maoist leader from Bengal, accused of aiding another CPI(Maoist) leader who is currently in the central agency's custody.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday arrested a Maoist leader accused in a case in Assam. The accused, identified as Samrat Chakraborty, was nabbed from the Kalyani Expressway in West Bengal.
The Guwahati wing of the central probe agency revealed that Samrat was the link man between the Maoist leadership and arrested Maoist leader Arun Kumar Bhattacharjee.
The arrest was made in connection to a case in Assam. Arun Kumar Bhattacharjee, alias Kanchan da of Bengal, is a Central Committee member and an ideologue of the banned outfit CPI (Maoists). He was tasked with establishing Maoist networks in Assam to further spread the roots of the organisation, especially in the North East, the NIA said in a statement.
On September 2, the NIA filed a chargesheet against six persons and arrested Bhattacharjee.
But, further probe revealed that Samrat Chakraborty was also an active member of the CPI (Maoists), an outfit based in Bengal.
"He was a linkman in clandestine communication between the top hierarchy of the organisation and Arun Bhattacharjee, who was operating from his hideout in Assam," the NIA said.
Samrat also visited Assam's Cachar to assist Arun Kumar Bhattacharjee in establishing activities for the banned outfit.
