New York beaches reopened on Monday following a shark attack on Sunday morning that injured a lifeguard. The U.S. recorded the most unprovoked shark bites last year.
"Suffolk County FRES’ drone team was activated in a shark watch this past weekend at Smith Point County Park. The team assisted Suffolk County Parks after a County lifeguard was injured in a shark-related incident during a training exercise on Sunday morning," Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services wrote in a Tuesday Facebook post.
"Working in cooperation with the Parks Department and lifeguards on jet skis and paddleboards, the team provided continuous monitoring of the surf line on Sunday and Monday. The team’s live streaming ability allowed parks officials, police and lifeguards to view real-time video from the drone operation," it explained.
