New platform at North Coimbatore railway station aims to reduce congestion at Coimbatore Junction, enhancing passenger services and infrastructure.
An additional platform under construction at North Coimbatore railway station is expected to ease pressure on Coimbatore Junction, with the work now in the final stages, railway officials said.
Southern Railway General Manager R. N. Singh reviewed the progress during an inspection on Friday (February 13, 2026) and interacted with officials overseeing the project.
The new platform, being built with a direct entry from the main entrance, will be earmarked for MEMU and other short-distance services. Officials said providing stoppages for these services at North Coimbatore would free up capacity at Coimbatore Junction for long-distance trains. The project is being executed under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, and the platform has been designed to handle trains with up to 12 coaches. The works are expected to be completed by March.
During the visit, the proposed redevelopment of Coimbatore Junction was also reviewed. Railway officials said the execution plan is being reworked, with the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) mode now under consideration in place of the earlier public-private partnership model. The EPC approach is expected to be more cost-efficient and allow greater focus on passenger infrastructure. The proposal is yet to be cleared by the Railway Board.
As part of his inspection tour, Mr. Singh reviewed Amrit Bharat Station Scheme works at Coimbatore North, Podanur and Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district, besides Shoranur in Kerala, and directed officials to expedite the works.
He also carried out a detailed sectional inspection between Podanur Junction and Shoranur Junction, reviewing track conditions, signalling systems, rail and foot overbridges, and passenger amenities. At Walayar, he reviewed the progress of the elephant intrusion detection system and inspected the proposed locations for elephant underpasses.
