
NCERT apologises over controversial judiciary chapter, withdraws Class 8 book

The National Council of Educational Research and Training, NCERT, withdraws its Class 8 textbook 'Exploring Society: India and Beyond – Part II' and issues a public apology over a judiciary-related chapter.
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has issued a public apology and withdrawn a recently published Class 8 social science textbook following concerns about one of its chapters that discusses the role of the judiciary.
In an official press release, NCERT acknowledged that the book titled "Exploring Society: India and Beyond – Grade 8 (Part II)" included a Chapter IV named "The Role of Judiciary in our Society."
The council stated that it regretted the publication of the chapter and extended an "unconditional and unqualified apology."
According to the statement, the Director and members of NCERT decided to withdraw the entire book from circulation, making it unavailable for distribution or use in schools. The council did not specify the exact issues with the chapter, but emphasised that corrective action had been taken promptly.

"NCERT sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused and appreciates the understanding of all stakeholders," the statement read.
