No. 7-seed North Carolina State will advance to the second round of the women's NCAA Tournament after defeating No. 10-seed Tennessee, 76-61, at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan on March 20.
NC State was led by sophomore guard Zamareya Jones who scored 30 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including 2-of-5 from deep and 10-of-13 from the free throw line. The Wolfpack survived an injury to junior guard Zoe Brooks, who went down with an apparent right leg injury with 5:02 left in the third period.
NC State led by seven when she left the game, but leaned on Jones and others to finish the job.
"I have always been a dog, I am too small to play, so having that chip on my shoulder, whether we are winning or not," Jones said. "I have that confidence, so I am going to come out to win every night."
Tennessee entered the contest with a 35-2 all-time record in the first round before today.
