Nasser Hussain and Lydia Greenway criticised India's Deepti Sharma for pulling off a controversial run out in the third ODI against England at Lord's. India completed a 3-0 series clean sweep over the hosts England.
Former England cricketers-turned-commentators Nasser Hussain and Lydia Greenway slammed India all-rounder Deepti Sharma for running out Charlie Dean at the non-striker's end during the third ODI at Lord's.
Deepti Sharma pulled off a controversial run out in the third ODI to help India complete a 3-0 clean sweep over England on Saturday, September 24.
On the third ball of the 44th over, Deepti ran out Dean at the non-striker's end after finding her leaving the crease before the release of the ball. This move, which is within the laws, left the England dugout visibly aggrieved as the mode of dismissal is seen by many as against the spirit of cricket.
Nasser Hussain, who was commentating on the match for Sky Sports, said: "I am not so sure. I know it is in the laws of the game Laws have changed, so if she was in her delivery stride, she was well within her rights to do that. They are going to debate that for a long time, but it is in the laws of the game. The laws of the game state that if she is in her delivery stride and the non-striker leaves her crease, you can be run out at the non-striker’s end."
Meanwhile, Lydia Greenway expressed her disappointment in the visiting India team. "It doesn't feel like the right way to win a game. They [India] are allowed to do it, they're well within their right to get a wicket that way, but I would disagree with the way that it was managed.
"If I was captain of that team, I would say let's give them a warning, and make sure that Charlie Dean is aware of what she's doing. As youngsters growing up playing the game you're taught to back up and Charlie was backing up, she was just focused on what was happening at the other end.
