
Murder trial begins for children's grief book author accused of killing husband

Kouri Richins, a Utah woman who wrote a kids' book on dealing with the loss of a loved one, is on trial for allegedly fatally poisoning her husband.
The long-awaited murder trial of a widow who wrote a grief book for children after her husband died and was later arrested in his death began this week in a Utah courtroom.
Kouri Darden Richins, 35, stands accused of killing her husband Eric Richins in early 2022 with fentanyl at their home just east of the ski town of Park City, Utah.
The trial began Feb. 23, in Park City before Summit County Third District Court Judge Richard Mrazik, online court records show.
According to charging documents in the case obtained by USA TODAY, Kouri Richins is accused of poisoning her spouse with fentanyl at their home in Kamas, a small mountain town in Summit County. Autopsy and toxicology reports found Eric Richins died from a lethal dose of the drug at the home about 40 miles east of Salt Lake City.
Kouri Richins faces charges of first-degree aggravated murder, attempted criminal homicide, forgery and two counts of insurance fraud in connection to the death of her husband, court records show.
