Municipal Corporation of Delhi urges citizens to get pet dogs registered

The Delhi Municipal Corporation Act mandates registration of pet dogs with the civic body, but residents are reluctant to come forward and do the needful.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has urged citizens to get their pet dogs registered in view of the increasing number of dog bite incidents, especially in the National Capital Region.
Under Section 399 of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957, it is mandatory to register all pet dogs with the municipal corporation. The section also empowers the municipal corporation to detain a pet dog found in a public place if it is not registered with the civic body. There is also a provision for slapping a fine on the pet owner and even prosecution.
Senior officials of the veterinary department of MCD said the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act mandates registration of pet dogs with civic body, but residents are reluctant to come forward and do the needful.
“We appeal to citizens to get their pet dogs registered at the earliest, otherwise appropriate action will be taken as per the DMC Act. The rule applies even to those who have adopted stray dogs as pets,” said a civic official.
Civic officials said registration helps in maintaining the exact count of pet dogs, who are vaccinated against rabies, in different zones. It helps in tracing a missing pet with the help of a registration number that is assigned to a dog. The purpose of the exercise is to prepare a database of pet dog owners, control illegal practices such as unregistered dog breeding, and monitor a pet’s vaccination schedules.
For the convenience of pet owners, the MCD is providing a convenient and hassle-free online facility for dog registration. Through this system, an applicant can register for a dog licence by providing relevant details in the application form available on the MCD portal mcdonline.nic.in. The documents that need to be submitted are the pet dog's anti-rabies vaccination certificate, a photograph of the pet, residence proof and identity proof of the owner.
