A 42-year-old mother and her two kids, a 15-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl, were killed in a major accident involving two vehicles in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu in the Montérégie region Sunday afternoon.
According to provincial police, a pickup truck travelling at a high speed hit the family's car, which was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Boulevard du Séminaire Nord and Boulevard Saint-Luc, around 10:30 a.m.
Following the impact, police said the truck dragged the vehicle for several metres before coming to a stop.
The driver of the pickup, a 65-year-old man, sustained minor injuries and was transported to hospital. He will speak with investigators when his condition permits it, police said.
The Sûreté du Québec (SQ)'s major crimes unit has taken over the investigation and have a reconstruction team on scene to determine the cause and circumstances of the collision.
Police said the cause of the crash is still unknown. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor, but speed could have played a role, according to the SQ.
