More Texas Democrats Spent The Night At The State Capitol In Protest

They called out Republicans for redistricting — and requiring Democrats to accept a police escort.
More Texas House Democrats spent the night at the state Capitol in Austin in support of Rep. Nicole Collier, who wasn’t allowed to leave the building after she refused to consent to a police escort.
Texas House Republican leaders would only allow Democratic lawmakers to return to their homes if they signed waivers allowing law enforcement to shadow them until a vote on redistricting Wednesday.
Collier refused and was barred from exiting the Capitol as a result. She spent Monday evening camped out on the House floor, and was accompanied by House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu and Rep. Vince Perez that evening.
Democratic lawmakers’ numbers multiplied on Tuesday, with others including state Reps. Penny Morales Shaw, Cassandra Garcia Hernandez, Mihaela Plesa and Rhetta Andrews Bowers joining the effort in protest.
“Who’s ready to tear up this slip?,” Plesa said just outside the House chamber, while ripping up the form she had previously signed for her own police escort.
