Mob attacks police station in West Bengal’s Bongaon after person goes on ‘stabbing’ spree 

Agitated mob attacks police station in West Bengal after arrest of man who stabbed four people, sparking controversy.

An agitated mob tried attacking police personnel and vandalising property at Bongaon Police Station in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on Wednesday evening (May 28, 2025) after a person was arrested for stabbing four people in a fit of rage, Bongaon Police said.

According to Bongaon Police, the 35-year-old accused had stabbed four persons with a sharp object in a madrasah in Bongaon on Wednesday evening. The police claimed the accused was “mentally unstable” and was arrested the same evening.

However, soon after the arrest, a large, agitated mob of around 100 people allegedly reached the police station and tried to “snatch” the accused from the police. The police have also claimed on social media that the mob attempted to vandalise the reception desk of the Bongaon Police Station, demanding that the accused person be handed over to them.

“Police dispersed the mob forthwith and arrested 10 persons. Raids are on to apprehend others who were involved in the attempted violence at the police station,” Bongaon Police said on social media, adding that “there is no communal angle” to the incident.

Bongaon superintendent of police Dinesh Kumar also said that the 35-year-old accused, who was arrested before the mob attack, is a resident of Purba Bardhaman district. Prior to stabbing four people at Bongaon, the accused had allegedly killed his parents at Purba Bardhaman’s Memari on Wednesday.

It is worth noting that Memari, where the accused allegedly killed his parents, and Bongaon, where he reportedly stabbed more people, are at least 100 kilometres away from each other.

Police sources from Purba Bardhaman have said that the accused is an engineer.
