Relatives of the attacker who rammed his truck into a synagogue outside Detroit were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon, a local official said.
WEST BLOOMFIELD, MI – An attacker is dead after he rammed a truck into one of the nation's largest synagogues where children were attending preschool on Thursday, March 12, in what the FBI described as a "targeted act of violence against the Jewish community."
Authorities say the man drove through a set of doors at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township around noon before he was fired upon in a hallway by security guards at the synagogue.
No children, clergy or staff members were wounded in the attack and over 140 students and staff at the temple's preschool were safely evacuated. A security guard was struck by the truck and is expected to survive, said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.
Authorities identified the attacker as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Lebanon.
The attack unfolded as authorities increased security around places of worship nationwide in response to U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, which have led to a widening war in the Middle East.
