Man facing 3rd attempted murder charge in St. John's apartment attacks
CBC
Mitchell Rose, 32, is now facing a third charge of attempted murder following a series of attacks in an apartment building on Anspach Street in St. John's last week.
Police arrived at the building on Dec. 8, finding two women with stab wounds on the scene. Both were sent to hospital.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is now alleging Rose attacked a third person at the apartment building as well, hence the latest charge.
That charge was sworn on Wednesday, but Rose did not appear in provincial court due to time constraints and logistical issues reaching him at the psychiatric hospital.
His case was set over to Thursday, when it's expected a judge will handle a request to hold him for a 30-day psychiatric assessment to determine if he is fit to stand trial.
Rose has been in custody at the forensic unit of the Mental Health and Addictions Centre in St. John's since last Wednesday.
His family says he has schizophrenia, and was released from a community treatment order without their knowledge. That order required Rose to take medication and abide by certain conditions, or face involuntary hospital admission.
Without the order, Rose's family says they were unable to avail of essential services when his mental health took a sharp decline days before the alleged attacks.
